CMC Microsystems delivers technology services in design (CAD), fabrication (FAB) and research (LAB) to over 10,000 researchers in Canadian universities, colleges and companies working in areas of R&D that have high impact on Canadian industry and economic growth: the Internet of Things (IoT) & Artificial Intelligence, Quantum, Microelectronics, Photonics, and Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS).

"We retained Alumni Analyzer so that we could support our messages about our graduates to government funders using objective, aggregate career data. This was no easy task, but Alumni Analyzer understood the level of understanding we were after."

Case StuDY

SNOLAB is the world’s leading deep underground clean lab hosting a dozen scientific experiments by large Canadian and international research teams. During more than 20 years of operation, numerous students and post-doctorates have passed through our facility either as users or employees. Inspiring and training these alumni for careers is one of our principal impacts on society.

As a facility that relies on public funds, having objective data on SNOLAB’s impacts is critical. Yet tracking our alumni through their careers has been a challenge. Alumni Analyzer found our alumni, connected with them, and documented their educational achievements and professional career paths – both statistically and anecdotally.

Alumni Analyzer produced a comprehensive report detailing SNOLAB’s success in inspiring and training staff and students, and demonstrating the valuable role SNOLAB alumni play in Canada’s tech and innovation ecosystem.

Alumni Analyzer delivered exactly what SNOLAB needed: objective, aggregate data showing SNOLAB alumni tend to pursue higher educational achievements, have high rates of retention within Ontario and Canada, enjoy strong career progression, and are more likely than other Canadian science graduates to work in high-tech and research-intensive sectors of the Canadian economy.

Dr. Jodi Cooley
Executive Director, SNOLAB

The findings support our message to funding partners about our impact on the workforce of tomorrow. I look forward to using their services again!

Case StuDY

CMC Microsystems delivers technology services in design (CAD), fabrication (FAB) and research (LAB) to over 10,000 researchers in Canadian universities, colleges and companies working in areas of R&D that have high impact on Canadian industry and economic growth: the Internet of Things (IoT) & Artificial Intelligence, Quantum, Microelectronics, Photonics, and Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS).

The many university students and postdocs who use CMC’s services as part of their thesis research gain industrially relevant experience. Our partners in industry always reported that CMC’s graduates were some of the finest minds they could hire. We were repeatedly told about their exceptional quality, and how they came ready for the most advanced positions in industry – saving firms time and money that would otherwise be spent on advanced training. We wanted to take a deeper dive and have a data-driven analysis of CNDN graduates’ impact.

We retained Alumni Analyzer so that we could support our messages about our graduates to government funders using objective, aggregate career data. This was no easy task, but Alumni Analyzer understood the level of understanding we were after.

The results of the Alumni Analyzer study strongly confirmed that CMC provided real and lasting value to its graduates both in terms of the advancement of their technical skills and their value to industry as highly qualified personnel:

  • CMC alumni enjoy accelerated career progression: They are twice as likely as their peers to be in executive and other management positions within 10 years.
  • Their employers enjoy greater employee retention and engagement: CMC alumni remain with their employers longer than peers, and this effect is seen for up to 20 years—Longer job tenure indicates a better fit between the employee and employer.
  • CMC alumni stay in Canada: Over 70% continue to live and work in Canada—a strong result for a hypercompetitive, globally integrated marketplace.
  • CMC alumni work in industry in greater proportions: 81% overall get employed by industry versus 75% for the peer group. Their probability of working in industry relevance is highest upon completion of degrees in which they engaged with the CMC, versus continuing academic research that does not rely on CMC’s services.
  • CMC alumni have a national impact: They work across the country in proportion to the concentration of industry sectors: manufacturing, professional & technical services, and information technologies.

CMC graduates collaborate with and work for over 1,000 Canadian firms from start-ups and scale-ups to industry giants in sectors where Canadian innovation is most needed, such has automotive, aerospace, energy and the environment, healthcare, and defense and security.

Thanks to Alumni Analyzer, CMC can now tell a clear, concise, data-driven story about the value of CMC to our government partners.

What data is needed for the study?

Our team requires a spreadsheet list of your alumni with full names and a year corresponding to their graduation or other engagement with you. Their degree level (e.g., undergraduate, Masters, PhD), and area of study may be helpful.

You can include other characteristics of their educational experience that you deem of interest for the analysis (e.g., honor roll, co-op).

What about data privacy?

No data will be disclosed to other parties without your permission. We will protect the data according to any standards that you require.

How long will a study take?

Please contact us several months ahead of when you will need the results. While we will do everything to make it simple for you, please allow a month to jointly develop the scope of work and to complete your procurement processes. Then, the time will vary from 1 to 4 months, depending on the scope of work and how many other studies are in our queue.

How do you report your findings?

Most of our clients are happy with a presentation-style report (as a PDF file) with graphs and figures illustrating the results, along with a summary of key findings.

Some data may be reported in a spreadsheet for you to import into your alumni database.

Do you sell alumni contact information?

We do not sell contact information. However, you can use any Linkedin IDs we find to reach out to alumni individually through Linkedin messaging.

How much does it cost?

Costs are determined based on the precise scope of work customized to meet your needs.
